Though they have a reputation for being painful, root canals actually significantly relieve the toothache pain and sensitivity that precedes them. Root canal therapy is necessary when decay or damage reaches the innermost pulp layer of the tooth where the nerve is housed. The result is irritation that directly affects the nerve causing severe pain. The procedure is relatively straightforward. We drill a small access hole into the top of the tooth. Then, we extract the pulp and nerve tissue. Finally, we reseal the tooth, and when necessary, place a dental crown over the tooth in order to strengthen and protected the treated dental structure.
