Nitrous Oxide

The longest used form of dental sedation, nitrous oxide is still one of the most popular sedative methods and most commonly used. The sedative is administered by placing a nasal mask, and as patients inhale and exhale through the nose, the sedative takes effect almost immediately. Nitrous oxide is commonly referred to as laughing gas due to the euphoric effect experienced by those patients who choose this sedation method. One of the main benefits of nitrous oxide sedation is that it takes effect and wears off very quickly. That means the doctor can easily adjust dosage for optimal comfort and relaxation during treatment, and patients need not worry about their daily routine. They can return to the office, school, or other activities immediately following their appointment. We may recommend nitrous oxide for a number of reasons including dental sensitivity, inability to numb with local anesthesia alone, mild dental phobia, or to make advanced treatments more comfortable.

Oral Conscious

Oral conscious sedation is ideal for those patients whose dental phobia or anxiety makes it difficult for them to leave home. The sedative is administered in pill form, and patients take it about an hour before their scheduled appointment before they ever leave home. While sedated, patients remain conscious, but they are very relaxed and typically do not remember their appointments. The effects of oral sedation are long lasting which means patients will need a friend or family member to drive them to and from our office and monitor them as they recover from the effects of the sedative.

General Anesthesiology

The most advanced form of sedation available, general anesthesiology renders patients completely unconscious throughout the course of treatment. This advanced form of sedation is only recommended for patients with extreme phobia, those in need of advanced surgical treatment, and for very young patients and those who are unable to understand their treatments who may have adverse responses that put them at risk. Safety is our top priority, and we carefully review all options with patients to ensure they fully understand the advantages, disadvantages, and potential risks associated with any treatment they receive at our office.
